The founder

Aubrey Thoede.

Aubrey was a Houston carpet cleaning technician in the 1980s and he kept watching the same problem: a fresh-cleaned carpet would look great for two weeks and then look worse than before. The reason was the soap. Every cleaning company on the market used harsh detergents that left a sticky residue, and that residue was a magnet for dirt.

He spent two years developing a chemical-free alternative. The result was a patented organic cleaner that cleans without leaving anything in the fiber. Safe enough to drink. He proved that on live TV. Multiple times. Still would.

In 1989 he bought a single truck-mounted unit, mounted his patented cleaner system on it, and started Dirt Free Carpet. Houston was the test market. Houston is still the home market.
